MEDICAL CAREERS
Correctional medical staff provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting. You will be responsible for ensuring offenders receive high-quality nursing care via assessments and screenings, administering medications and other treatments, changing dressings, and monitoring patient condition.
Our Medical Administration Division employs a wide range of professional and paraprofessional classifications, (i.e. Psychiatrists, Dentists, Physicians, Nurses, Lab Technicians).
Many of those recruitments are operated on a continual basis. Our Medical Administration Division offers the following career opportunities:
The Mission of the Medical Division of the Nevada Department of Corrections
The Nevada Department of Corrections Medical Division is committed to providing quality, evidenced-based health care using an efficient system of managed care that is professional, humane and appropriate, and is supportive of the overall mission of the Nevada Department of Corrections.
Constitutional Obligation
The State has a constitutional obligation to provide health care for its incarcerated population. The Federal Courts have mandated that offenders, though incarcerated, remain entitled to basic medical care. Offenders enter the system with varying educational levels, income ranges, and medical histories. Statistics show offenders often have lower educational levels, lower average incomes, and a higher than average rate of illness and chronic disease when compared to the general population.
Range of Medical Problems
Our Medical Administration Division reviews, assesses and resolves a wide array of medically-related situations comparable to that of any medical care facility within the private sector. Circumstances range from minor to major general problems, to acute illnesses or injuries to ongoing care for chronic diseases; and preventive health care to end-of-life care.
Medical Services
Each major institution has a medical and dental clinic and some infirmary capacity. There are two institutions with on-site acute care infirmaries with approximately 91 infirmary beds. The medical staff engages in over 600 patient care contacts each day statewide. The Medical Division provides primary care at each institution and on-site clinics are held periodically with outside specialists such as cardiologists, surgeons, and gastroenterologists. The Medical Division also provides hospitalization in community hospitals when necessary.
About the Job
Correctional nursing can be one of the most diverse settings available. The scope and standards of practice for correctional nurses can be vast, far more than monitoring blood pressure and mental health; although that is part of the job as well. Correctional nursing is typically a combination of acute care, emergency, community health, psychiatric, women’s health, and palliative care.
In many ways, corrections nursing is quite intense. Offenders often have a high rate of chronic disease, have lacked access to healthcare in the past, and have worsening current conditions. You may be called on to treat a wide range of healthcare needs, both chronic and acute. Some situations will require you to learn or refresh skills that aren’t as common in other settings. The diverse responsibilities pay off. Many correctional nurses often report that offenders are among their most thankful patients.
Healthcare is a field that requires compassion. Correctional nurses must be able to see beyond someone’s criminal record and provide the best possible support for every patient. It reminds you of the difference a little empathy makes in the lives of others. This setting has job security and there will continue to be correctional healthcare opportunities for years to come.
Correctional Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting. The Nevada Department of Corrections has a vacancy for a Correctional Nurse throughout the state of Nevada. Incumbents must be reliable, able to work independently, be able to apply critical thinking skills in assessing and evaluating patients, possess good problem-solving skills, have excellent intervention, communication and evaluation skills, must be able to work under pressure, adjust to change, make quick but accurate medical decisions, and be a team player.
